JEWELLERY REPAIRS, ALTERATIONS & RESTORATION
Every piece of well-loved jewellery will require some attention from a goldsmith during its lifetime.
It's important that your jewellery be properly serviced, protected and insured and we can help with all of your jewellery servicing needs.
How to choose your repair goldsmith
Is the jeweller properly insured?
Probably the least considered aspect of repairs is, what happens if your item is lost or stolen while it is being repaired? However unlikely, it's important that the jeweller is properly insured against losses and should be able to produce proof of this insurance. There's a special kind of jeweller's insurance that will protect your items while in the jeweller's care—it's called Jeweller's Block and is quite separate from a general commercial liability policy. Jeweller's Block is the only kind of policy that will properly protect your items and we don't recommend you leave your valuables with any jeweller who cannot produce proof of this insurance.
Is there a full workshop & trained goldsmith on staff?
It's important that the jeweller be able to carry out most, if not all, of the work on their premises.
So make sure there's a goldsmith on staff and ask to see the workshop.
Does the jeweller have a laser welder?
Many jewellery repairs involve melting metal to strengthen a setting or simply for soldering things together. Gems are that sensitive to heat, rings that have fine details or pieces where the metal is very thin often require the use of a laser welder. Laser welders generate very little heat and have pinpoint accuracy. A laser welder may not be necessary for your repair, but jewellers who have them are the ones that are best equipped for repairs.
