B Corp Month Repairs & Remakes Fundraiser
March is B Corp Month! To celebrate, we're bringing back our Repairs & Remakes fundraising event. You may recall that last March the Cabbagetown BIA facilitated a month-long fundraiser in support of local food banks. We're proud to say that FTJCo raised the most of any business, so of course we're doing it again!
How does it work? When you book a Jewellery Repairs or Jewellery Remake appointment in the month of March, we'll donate 20% of the pre-tax proceeds towards this fundraiser. Our goal is to incentivize you to bring in your old and broken jewellery to have it fixed up or transformed into something new! This ties in to B Corp month by encouraging our clients and community to repair and reuse the jewellery and gems they already own, instead of trashing them and buying new.
Which organization are we supporting? This year, in honour of International Women's Day on March 8th, we're donating to Alpha House, a second-stage treatment facility offering abstinence-based recovery support. Our donation will contribute to a brand new treatment facility for women, trans, non-binary and women-identifying people in Oshawa. This will be their first facility focusing on support for women+!
The Alpha House program provides participants with education & employment support, life skills development, individual & group counseling, 24/7 onsite support, medical & psychiatric support, holistic wellness programs, and an alumni aftercare program. We are really impressed with their outcomes, which in the '23/'24 period included:
👏 71.4% of clients maintained abstinence for over two years.
👏 64% successfully transitioning off opiate replacement therapy before graduation.
👏 100% of graduates secure safe and affordable long-term housing.
👏 93% program completion rate.
👏 68% of clients gaining employment or returning to school.
👏 91% reporting no food insecurity.
Why repairs and remakes? We’ve chosen to highlight repairs and remakes for two key reasons. First, they are accessible! Repairing your existing jewellery doesn’t require a big investment; most people have some old jewellery lying around that doesn’t get worn because it’s broken, the wrong size, or no longer reflects your preferred style. We hope this event will serve as the gentle nudge you need to bring these pieces in to freshen them up and make them wearable again.
The second reason we’re featuring repairs and remakes is because of the environmental benefit of repairing and restoring something old, rather than starting from scratch. Repairing or reworking your existing jewellery requires a much smaller environmental footprint, and generates less waste. It’s a win-win.
Business as a force for good. In 2020 and 2021 we donated over $34,000 to food banks and similar causes chosen by our clients to support our community during the COVID 19 crisis. In 2024, we donated over $1,100 for Cabbagetown Cares, supporting Dixon Hall. We're excited to see how much we can raise for Alpha House this year, with your support.
